Hydrogen water supplementation, neuro-gastroenterology (gut science) and depression

Human physiology is such that our body possesses as many feel-good receptors in the gut as there are in the brain. Hence, neuro-gastroenterologists have identified the gut as the second brain. To be sure, a highly functioning gut is critical to more than digestion and nutrient absorption, it is a massive dynamic in the sustenance of our emotional wellbeing.

At some point in our daily awareness, what we feel, be it positive or negative or neither, is riddled through our gut. Our eyes and our brain may be the arbiters of what is good and beautiful, funny or sad, but it is our gut that delivers the feeling.

Otherwise known as the enteric nervous system, our gut is a long tube of walls that hide hundreds of millions of neurons —even more than the spinal cord—of every known feel-good neurotransmitter including dopamine, nor-epinephrine, serotonin, and nitric oxide. Neurogastroenterologists have identified —from our esophagus to our sphincter—over 30 different neurotransmitters lining our alimentary canal. In fact, our guts are “talking” to our brains all day long. And all night long as well.

Feeling butterflies? This is undoubtedly a blend of epinephrine and dopamine. Feeling calm? GABA and Serotonin. Some believe that over ninety percent of our serotonin is based in our guts.

The gastrointestinal tract is constantly exposed to oxidized food combinations creating a toxic stew that is quickly absorbed into the plasma and eventually our lymph glands. Oxidized matter then triggers a ripple of inflammation through the circulatory system. This not only negatively affects the circulatory system, but the kidneys, lungs, the liver and of course it all loops back to the gut. The long and the short of it is that this constant exposure to oxidized foods in our guts is a chronic threat to our health. This is why our gut needs to be regularly cleared of the negative influences created by oxidation. Not just for our emotional health, but our health in general.

Our gut is the source of much potential to make us feel good. It is also the source of much potential to make us feel bad. A moist vesperiary of toxicity, bacteria, virus, and fungus it thrives on oxygen, especially free radical oxygen and O2 oxygen. By the way, all of the aforementioned contribute to metabolic syndrome, the infirmity characterized by obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, usually combined with insulin resistance, AKA diabetes.

It is no secret that unpaired oxygen radicals prompt damage to DNA, fats and proteins in our guts. Gut oxidation is a conspicuous component of cancer, cardiovascular issues, neurodegenerative disease and of course advanced cell death and aging. The health benefit of a diet rich in H2 hydrogen water is a thousand fold more powerful than a diet full of antioxidants: fruits, red wine and green tea, coffee . . . Hydrogen water was also reported to be significantly more effective than oral antioxidant supplements including but not exclusive to vitamin E, vitamin C, folic acid, alpha lipoic acid and Co Q 10.

In one study, (Kajjyama et al. 45) found that when consumed for sixty days H2 water lowered a number of bio-markers for oxidation including LDL cholesterol and urinary isoprostanes and also improved glucose metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Conclusion:

Free radical oxidation is damaging because it inhibits gut cell membrane fluidity leading to cell inactivation such as cutting off cell bound enzymes. H2 Hydrogen water has the powerful ability, given its extraordinary lightness (it is so ethereal that it can easily pass through plastic) to reduce surface tension of the gut cell walls allowing H2 to easily to enter and start scavenging free radical oxygen molecules (O) in the cell and mitochondria. The residue is H20—water! Not only are you converting damaging free radicals in cells and neurons into a harmless substance but you are also hydrating cells from within. To be sure, supplementation with H2 water is the next paradigm in the maintenance of physical and emotional wellbeing.
