New German study on macular degeneration published this month on PubMed.gov Idebenone was found to prevent cell aging and cell death in the eyes induced by oxidation

Macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness in older people. It is brought on by the deterioration of the retinal pigment epithelium accelerated by oxidative stress. The net effect is blind spots. There are two forms of macular degeneration, dry and wet. Wet is caused by the aberrant growth of blood vessels in the central retina area of the eye. Dry macular degeneration is more common and less serious than wet.

The study was designed to investigate Idebenone’s potential ability to protect eye cells from oxidation and other negative stimuli The study identified conclusive evidence that idebenone attenuated macular impairment in older people with the affliction.

In this study, idebenone clearly augmented survival of ARPE-19 cells thereby reducing cell death, cell aging, and oxidative stress by stabilizing the BAX/Bcl-2 ratio. In what is becoming the go to antioxidant for eye disease, Idebenone has also demonstrated clear color vision improvement in male patients afflicted with Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON). Heretofore there has not been as satisfactory a treatment for either Leber’s or macular degeneration.
